아홉 번째 논문 - 영문 교정 (22.11.05)
미국 포닥 오기 전 4개월 정도 포닥으로 지냈었는데, 그 때 수행하였던 마지막 연구를 드디어 투고하기 직전까지 왔다.
지난 주에 교정본을 받았고, 아래와 같은 몇 가지 영어 표현 (비슷한 실수를 반복한다.) 에 대한 지적 사항을 기록해 둔다.
교정 1. First-principles model: Your initial model that uses phenomenology (I think) is using them as the first principles, i.e., the most basic building blocks of knowledge. Therefore, it is a model that use first principleS. Used as a compound adjective, in which ‘first’ modifies ‘principles’, and together they modify model, the words are hyphenated, so the result is ‘first-principles model’. NOT ‘first principle model’. I have made all of these changes in the text, but you will need to correct the figures that use ‘first principle model’.
교정 2. “Performance” is a USELESS word. It has so many possible meanings that it has no meaning. I have seen it used to mean literally dozens of different concepts; here are some: Speed, Accuracy, Bit error rate, SINR, PSNR, Corrosion resistance, Crumpling characteristics, Electrical characteristics, Luminous efficiency, Output/input ratio, Device lifetime, Cycling endurance …
I frequently see the word used with several obviously different (but undefined) meanings in the same paper.
I challenge you to find a specific word or phrase, even if it means increasing the number of words that you use. If the task is difficult, I prove my point. The task is yours, not your reader’s.
Sometimes the word is not even necessary (For example “BER performance” can be reduced to “BER”.) (“Outperform[s/ed]” is similarly ambiguous).
교정 3. Based on; -based: Excessive use of this term seems to be a recent fad in papers that I have edited. It is too vague. Unless you mean it literally (‘The house was built based on a granite outcrop’), find a specific term. For example, ‘a model based on a previous one’ becomes ‘a model that is derived from a previous one’. Some constructions like ‘based on this observation, we…’ make no sense, and seem to be a lazy attempt to avoid having to find a meaningful presentation.
교정 4. “Work” in the sense of ‘research’ is an uncountable noun; the plural form is invalid.
교정 5. “Methodology” Do not use this word as a substitute for ‘method’. The suffix ‘ology’ means ‘the study of’ or ‘the logic of’. Therefore, ‘methodology’ means ‘the study of methods’ or ‘the logic of methods’. Just use ‘method’, or if you mean ‘a set of methods to use sequentially’, use ‘protocol’.
교정 6. You can't 'train' data. You can only train the algorithm to learn patterns in them then provide a model.
영문 교정을 반영하고 전체적으로 훑어본뒤에 11월 이내로 투고 예정이다. 나의 첫 번째 교신 저자 논문이 될 것 같다.
억셉트이전까지 모두 끝난 것은 아니지만, 그래도 영문 교정까지 완료되면 한숨 돌릴 수 있을 것 같다.
오늘의 일기 끝 :)
